I Am My Own Wife

I Am My Own Wife is a one-person play, a biographical piece focusing on the life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, an East German transvestite who navigated life under both Nazi and Communist regimes. The actor portrays over 30 characters, telling a story based on interviews with von Mahlsdorf, exploring themes of survival and identity. The original production won a Pulitzer Prize and a Tony Award. This staging at the Rosenthal Shelterhouse Theatre in Cincinnati offers a more intimate setting for the narrative. The smaller space often allows for a closer connection to the performer and the complex story. It’s a good fit for those interested in historical drama, character studies, and nuanced theatrical performances.
