Set in 1962, at Christmastime. The touring women’s basketball team, the Shooting Stars, is preparing to face off against a local men’s team in a pre-Title IX America for an exhibition “game.”. Their manager, Cassius, serves as their “patriarch”, and keeps them focused on their loyalty to the team – seemingly over all else. Unfortunately, Cassius’ motives are more about the profits than the team. Delightfully funny banter and team horseplay throughout breaks up the deep issues the characters are dealing with as they spend Christmas away from loved ones. This play, written by Molly Newman, was written in 1988, and has withstood the test of time due to its clever writing, and the ideals of women pushing past expectations and creating “family” when none are near.
