Rehearsal: The Causerie

This event will feature best-selling author Sarah Thornton in conversation with Jessica Silverman, owner of the Jessica Silverman Gallery in San Francisco. Discussing her influential 2008 book Seven Days in the Art World, as well as her new project that offers an inside look into startup culture, Thornton will explore the nuances of immersing oneself into a new professional field and the myths that may or may not be debunked. Thinking about the relationship between contemporary art, sociology, and investigation, the evening will encourage guests to probe, question, and exchange ideas around the dinner table. This event includes a plated dinner.

Described by the Washington Post as "the Jane Goodall of the art world,” Sarah Thornton is the author of three books: Seven Days in the Art World, 33 Artists in 3 Acts, and Club Cultures. Formerly the chief writer on contemporary art for The Economist, Thornton has a BA in Art History and a PhD in Sociology. She lives in San Francisco and is working on a new book titled 8 Days in Silicon Valley.

Jessica Silverman founded her San Francisco gallery ten years ago, after obtaining her MA in Curatorial Practice from the California College of the Arts. The gallery is known internationally for discovering emergent artists whatever their age – from 78-year-old Judy Chicago to 35-year-old Dashiell Manley – and shedding new light on the careers of established artists like Isaac Julien and Amikam Toren. A regular participant in Art Basel Miami Beach and FIAC (Paris), Silverman sits on the committees for EXPO CHICAGO and the Armory (New York). She is on the Board of the San Francisco Arts Commission and the curator of fused space, located within Yves Behar’s Fuseproject. Upcoming shows include Kinship: Celebrating 10 years of Jessica Silverman Gallery and a solo show of Andrea Bowers.
