Black Comedy by Peter Shaffer was first performed in London in 1965. Sir Peter Shaffer is best known for works such as Amadeus and Equus but in 1964 he made a humorous detour and took a look at the antics of what happens to a group of characters feeling their way around a pitch-black room although the stage is actually flooded with light, and Black Comedy was born.

Brindsley Miller, a young sculptor, and his fiancée Carol Melkett, borrow furniture from Harriet, Brindsley’s neighbor, without Harriet’s knowledge. This to impress an art collector coming to view Brindsley’s work. Power fails as, unexpectedly, Harriet shows up and Clea, Brindsley’s ex mistress! Now things start sliding into disaster
…..
The play opens on a black stage. A few minutes into the show a fuse is blown, and the stage is illuminated to reveal the characters in a “blackout”. Chaos ensues in this farcical comedy.
