In Fremde Tänze Nelisiwe Xaba looks back at the exoticism of modern dance during the years between the two world wars, asking us to consider how a contemporary South African woman might view what's foreign or strange in European culture. In so doing, she confounds our preconceptions of time and space, past and present, familiar and foreign. Commissioned by Tanzfonds Erbe and premiered in Germany, Fremde Tänze is part of a week-long conference at Northwestern University on "Black Arts International: Temporalities and Territories," which asks how history has shaped black artistic production outside the US and how the valuation of black art changes within a global context.
